Ginger | Myanmar N° 53
Myanmar is a land of striking contrasts. Its breathtaking landscapes, golden pagodas, and centuries-old tea cultures stand in the shadow of a history marked by violence. The ginger grown between the tea plants carries a beautifully delicate, nuanced heat.Sharp, intense notes of ginger embrace the dark, fruity couverture, composed with a liquid core that balances spice and sweetness. A journey to surrender.
Clear – vibrant – flowing
The Ta’ang are one of Myanmar’s oldest ethnic minorities. For centuries, tea has been deeply rooted in their identity – not merely a trade commodity, but a symbol of their culture. In the mountains of northern Shan State, between 1,200 and 1,600 meters above sea level, they cultivate certified organic tea with great care and according to the highest ecological standards. Between the tea bushes, ginger roots grow – protecting the soil while providing an additional source of income. The plants support each other, enrich the earth, and preserve the region’s biodiversity.
After a brief democratic spring, Myanmar plunged back into a brutal dictatorship following the 2021 military coup. Protests are violently suppressed, millions have fled their homes, and the economy has collapsed. Yet away from the conflict, there are places of hope: in the tea gardens of northern Shan, the Ta’ang people hold fast to ancient knowledge.
For the Ta’ang, sustainability is more than just a concept – it is a way of life. Instead of monocultures, they practice mixed cultivation: between the tea plants grow ginger rhizomes, which protect the soil while providing an additional source of income. The plants support each other, improving soil quality and preserving the region’s biodiversity. This principle – a natural symbiosis of tea and ginger – is a double gain: for the environment and for the people.
